Chunmei Zheng presented designing tasks for assessing critical thinking in Math lessons. Thanh Buu Tran commented on standardized testing in the Chinese school system from a Canadian student teacher’s perspective. Zong Zong talked about exploring the professional growth of teacher as researcher. Yuhan Deng introduced her research on Canadian pre-service teachers’ Chinese language learning and cross-cultural learning.

Yining Fu described initial findings from a three-year, joint research project that explores the ethical learning of pre-service teachers at the University of Alberta, Canada and Soochow University. BruceTucker and Zuocheng Zhang reflected on the experience of a Chinese participant in the Student Exchange component of the Reciprocal Learning in Teacher Education and School Education between Canada and China. Dan Xiao presented a case study of a Chinese senior high school English teacher whose cultural awareness was strengthened after participating in the Canada-China Teacher Education Reciprocal Learning Program. Chunmei Liu compared library education in Canada and China.

Dr. Anthony N. Ezeife highlighted and addressed several areas of variance between dominant (mainstream) and Indigenous/ethnic minority cultures. Nesreen Elkord presented Arab immigrant youths’ perspectives that reveal various encounters and achievements they have experienced at school and at home in a Canadian educational context. Dianne Stevens presented her research that examines immigration from the perspective of Grade 9 students of Asian ethnicity, many of whom are immigrants or the children of immigrants. Xiangyu Li explored differences in 1) instructional strategies, 2) teaching design, 3) teacher’s acceptance of special students, 4) support and barriers of inclusive classrooms between urban and rural schools in China.

Ying Chen and Doug McDougall presented their observations on teachers’ professional growth and changes as the result of a three-year reciprocal learning partnership while assessing the post-impact of learning for teachers. Zuochen Zhang and Pinge Ai shared their experiences and observations regarding certain aspects of collaboration between pairs, such as 1) ways of communication, 2) language barrier, and 3) mutual visits by administrators and teachers. Cynthia Zhu and Doug McDougall followed two pairs of teachers from Canada and China as they engaged in reciprocal learning over the course of three years. They noticed that reciprocal learning partnerships are developed through three main temporal stages where teachers learn about each other, learn from each other, and then learn with each other. Successful relationships can be developed through including content, planning and social driven interactions. Ruxandra Nahaiciuc, Geri Salinitri and Yuanrong Li explored the University of Windsor, Secondary Science Group’s lived experiences and perceptions of the bridge they have helped build through extensive Canada-China Pre-Service exchanges. Sirous Tabrizi reflected upon how equity, adequacy, and excellence in public education systems contribute towards accomplishing Sustainable Development Goal 4.

Concurrent 4A: Education and Cultural Diversity in Southwestern China

Tian Xiao and Shuhan Yang demonstrated spatial and temporal variation of resource allocation efficiency of secondary vocational education in Yunnan. Fengxiao He applied the theory of empowerment to understand how minority communities in Yunnan province approach sustainable community development through empowered learning. Shuhan Yang further talked about an action research project her team had carried out in Weishan county. The project was supported by the World Bank and aimed at exploring an effective path for Yi cultural inheritance through the making of Yi-Han bilingual picture books involving children aged 3-6 years old. Finally, using Southwest Minzu University as an example, Guohuan Yu discussed the need for national colleges and universities in China to construct harmonious campus cultures.

Chunlei Liu and George Zhou presented their narrative inquiry into the cross-cultural learning experiences of Chinese science teacher candidates’ cross-cultural learning experiences in Canada as they participated in a reciprocal learning program between the University of Windsor and China Southwest University. Vanessa Mio and Jonathan Bayley investigated Chinese music students’ reciprocal learning experiences during a three-month residency in Canada. Terry Sefton explored cultural education in art and music in the reciprocal learning program. Ju Huang shared the cross-cultural experiential stories and induction process of Andi from his time in Canada, to his experiences as a beginning teacher. Luxin Yang and Chen Li showed the classroom culture constructed in a Calligraphy classroom at a primary school in Beijing and discussed how their study may offer insights into Chinese students’ collectivistic and individual learning in school settings and facilitate reciprocal learning between Canadian and Chinese sister schools.

Thanh Buu Tran talked about the effects of modernization on the value of Chinese school education. Yuanrong Li and Guihua Zhang presented their study comparing Canadian and Chinese pre-service science teachers’ view of nature of science. Ruxandra Nahaiciuc shared about a series of water projects her team had conducted in collaboration with secondary schools in Windsor and Chonqing with the support of a Canadian university in Southwestern Ontario and the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research. Yishin Khoo and Adrienne Rigler engaged the idea of “reciprocal learning as collaborative partnership” in their paper and used school-based narrative inquiry as its theoretical and methodological framework to explore a water-based reciprocal learning partnership among teachers in Canada and China.

David Meloche paid much attention to the cultural and philosophical differences between Canadian and Chinese Health and Physical Ed programs while Jillian Parker compared outdoor education. John Serio studied the role of nutrition and health education in China. Mitchell Paterson talked about high school mathematics curriculums and pedagogies and Ryan Dodich evaluated the influence of student-teacher relationships in elementary school systems.
